Cigarettes
Cigarettes have been called one of the leading killers of people in modern American society. The effects of smoking cigarettes and the mounting evidence of cigarette facts have not led as many people away from the dangers of smoking cigarettes, not as much as one might think anyway. There are a variety of reasons why people choose to smoke cigarettes. Cigarette ads used to get the brunt of all of the blame; between the cartoon ads of Joe Camel and all of the other hype that seems to make cigarette smoking such a cool thing to do have now been dispelled as there has been legislation passed that puts a limit on the type of cigarette ads a company can put out there for people to see. Still, cigarette coupons and discount cigarettes are out there and those are proudly broadcast on the outside of discount smoke shops across the country. From Newport to Marlboro to Doral and even Virginia Slims, cigarettes are part of American culture and unfortunately it is something that every red-blooded American is forced to deal with.
So what is it about cigarette smoking that draws so many people in, anyway? Perhaps it is the allure of smoking, the x-factor that seems to make so many people look so much more sophisticated with a cigarette in their hand. Perhaps it is the habit; after all, cigarettes are very much like a drug that has been legalized in the United States and people tend to abuse that, as it is with alcohol abuse. Although they are not tax-free, cigarettes come at a very reasonable price which means that everyday people can easily purchase what it takes to get that legal high, but considering the true costs of smoking cigarettes these days many people might feel that it is not worth it.
Cigarette smoking is known to contribute to causing some forms of cancer. Emphysema is a condition of the lungs that can be caused by smoking cigarettes and cigarettes are known to age the body as well, and that goes against what most Americans are striving for, so what is it about cigarettes that is so alluring? The world may never know for sure, but we have certainly come up with a lot of ‘cures’ in the meantime, from acupuncture to hypnosis to chewing gum. One of these days one of these will work, or people will sit up and take notice.
