Camel Cigarette Advertisement
Luckily for these newer generations of kids, Joe Camel isn’t[ a household name. When many of the smokers in America were growing up he was the coolest thing next to Zorro himself on television; the cowboy thing always has had its allure when it comes to the television and kids and Joe Camel was the coolest cowboy of them all, even if he was a strange hump-less camel out of place in the high desert plains of Texas. Camel cigarette advertisements were certainly works of art, and there is no denying that at all. They were meticulously drawn cartoons with the smallest details spelt out in the name of getting the point across, and they came out well in any genre whether it was magazine, newspapers, or even the television commercials on cable and regular television channels. Camel’s approach to advertising certainly helped to boost its sales, but it attracted too many kids to the dangerous habit of smoking and there were many parents and special interest groups that were against that. After all, if you make something seem cool to a child when they are at the right age, chances are that they will try it and Joe Camel was designed to be the coolest of them all; that was the point of having him as the Camel cigarette advertisement mascot in the first place.
Unfortunately for Camel and many other companies, there are now restrictions on the types of advertisements that tobacco companies can make and this is very limited. That means goodbye to Joe Camel, and that was met with split reactions as some people were sad to see him go while still others were relieved.
Since the change in the way that tobacco companies get the word out, the focus has not been so much on getting people to try out smoking and tobacco products but also on boosting the appeal of their brand over the others. Low tar, low-anything-else are both indicators of a plea at getting one-up on the other guy, but they don’t mean anything. However low in the toxic ingredients a cigarette is, they still contain toxic ingredients and a cigarette is a cigarette is a cigarette however the pie is sliced. Don’t let new cigarette ads fool you; cigarette smoking is dangerous and horrible for the health and it can lead to a variety of problems that nobody wants. People spend their whole lives trying to quit smoking, and cigarette advertisements are no longer allowed to encourage that unhealthful habit.
